Position Description

The University of Washington Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery is seeking one full-time lead ARNP or PA at the rank of Teaching Associate. The Lead Advanced Practice Provider (ARNP or PA) deployed to UWMC Montlake is a member of a tertiary care Otolaryngology-HNS team that includes 14 attending physicians, 25 residents, 7 APPS, as well as audiologists, speech language pathologists and over 50 support staff.

In collaboration with the clinic manager, medical director, and the department chair, the lead APP actively supports growth and development of the APPs (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) with up to 10 direct (ARNP or PA) reports. In addition, this position actively supports programs and services that promote the long-range strategic objectives of the Department, UWMC and UW Medicine. This role reports to the Department Chair with matrix reporting to the UWMC Medical Director.

This role will provide perioperative support and continuity of care across all Otolaryngology sub-specialties with a 60/20/20 split between inpatient, clinic responsibilities and leadership responsibilities. Clinically, the applicant will be responsible for providing services independently and collaboratively in the perioperative environment including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patient’s medical status as well as the opportunity to provide first surgical assist. This is a Teaching Associate position in the Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery. This faculty position has an annual service period of 12-months (July 1 - June 30). The anticipated start date is March 1, 2022.

Leadership/Human Resources Qualifications

  • In collaboration with department leadership, create a professional practice environment for the advancement of APPs, and role models effective leadership. 
  • Promote organizational philosophy of Patients are First and continuous performance improvement.
  • Establish goals and action plans to provide a vision and direction for the APP practice.
  • Provide timely, ongoing bi-directional communication with APPs and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Serve as a resource, liaison, advocate, and mentor to develop and build APP teams.
  • In collaboration with the service chief, and department director, assists with recruitment and the hiring of APP teaching associates, initial competency assessment, plans of appropriate orientation, and annual evaluation for APPs.
  • Provide informal/formal performance feedback and develops performance improvement plans as necessary.

Standards of Practice and Performance

  • Provide complex and problem-focused initial assessment, screening/diagnostic evaluation, management, and follow-up with otolaryngology patients.
  • Participate in the interdisciplinary evaluation, management, and follow-up of patients using appropriate clinical practice guidelines.
  • Evaluate and manage urgent issues. 
  • Perform procedures according to licensure, credentialing, and scope of practice including surgical first assist (will train), wound assessment, sino-nasal endoscopy, and cerum removal.
  • Collaborate with the Otolaryngology team, PCPs, and other providers to ensure coordination and continuity of care for patients across the continuum of care and over time.
  • Participate as a key member of the interdisciplinary team through the development of collaborative and innovative practices and evaluation of patient care outcomes.
  • Provide other duties as requested, consistent with the APP role.


  • Current and valid state licensure as an ARNP or PA-C (or foreign equivalent).
  • Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in the care of patients.
  • Experience implementing comprehensive evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • Experience in the supervision of APPs including initial and ongoing competency assessment, orientation, professional development, and annual evaluation.
  • Training and 3-5 years of experience in the provision of otolaryngology care including initial assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and management of non-surgical Otolaryngology indications: oral cavity lesions, dysphagia, chronic cough, chronic sinusitis, conducting pre/post op visits, performing sino-nasal endoscopy, hearing loss screening and evaluation, tinnitus counseling, and cerum removal.
