Position Description

The Advanced Practice Provider (ARNP or PA) deployed to UWMC Northwest and Eastside is a full-time member of the Otolaryngology-HNS team that includes 5 attending physicians, 4 audiologists and dedicated clinic and OR staff. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing services independently and collaboratively with appropriate privileges, including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patient’s medical status as well as the opportunity to provide first surgical assist. This is a Teaching Associate position in the Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery. This faculty position has an annual service period of 12-months (July 1 - June 30). The anticipated start date is March 1, 2022.

Standards of Practice and Performance

  • Provides complex and problem-focused initial assessment, screening/diagnostic evaluation, management, and follow-up with otolaryngology patients.
  • Participates in the interdisciplinary evaluation, management, and follow-up of patients using appropriate clinical practice guidelines.
  • Evaluates and manages urgent issues.
  • Performs procedures according to licensure, credentialing, and scope of practice including surgical first assist (will train), wound assessment, sino-nasal endoscopy, and cerum removal.
  • Collaborates with the Otolaryngology Team, PCP, and other providers to insure coordination and continuity of care for patients across the continuum of care and over time.
  • Participates in the UWMC Northwest call pool.
  • Participates in appropriate interdisciplinary team meetings and serve as a resource for nursing staff.
  • Provides patient and/or family with health education, counseling and referrals to other health professionals and community resources as appropriate.
  • Participates as a key member of the interdisciplinary team through the development of collaborative and innovative practices and evaluation of patient care outcomes.
  • Provides other duties as requested consistent with the APP role.

Service APP Duties

  • The APP maintains excellent interpersonal skills to execute the UWMC Best Practice Model.
    • Establishing a therapeutic relationship by imparting a commitment to care for the patient and family through the acute illness and beyond
    • Connecting with the patient and family by eliciting the patient/family perspective and validating the value of that perspective using strong empathic listening skills
    • Communicating a sense of caring and openness
  • The APP provides clinical support in all the domains of the management.
    • Patient/family/provider communication about disease and treatment and how it relates to patient values, priorities, and goals of care across the spectrum of care.
    • Provides service as scheduled Monday-Friday and while taking call. Evaluates patients within template clinic time and as needed.
  • The APP collaborates with the primary team, other members of the service, and nursing
    • Makes individualized recommendations for patient care
    • Contributes to the plan of care and communicates the plan of the care to patients, families and team.
    • Promotes a collaborative approach to decision making with appropriate interdisciplinary consultation.
    • Ensures appropriate and timely hand-off of patient care when absent from clinic.
  • The APP teaches and mentors new 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current and valid state licensure as an ARNP and Graduate Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or Graduate of an accredited PA Program.
  • Nationally Certified ARNP or PA-C with DEA (or foreign equivalent).
  • Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in the care of patients.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Training and experience in the provision of otolaryngology care including initial assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and management of non-surgical Otolaryngology indications: oral cavity lesions, dysphagia, chronic cough, chronic sinusitis, conducting pre/post op visits, performing sino-nasal endoscopy, hearing loss screening and evaluation, tinnitus counseling, cerum removal.
  • Primary Care and Inpatient Experience, Surgical assist experience.
