Telemedicine Concussion DNP Project

Posted over 7 years ago by Cydne Marckmann

Do you see sports concussions in your practice? Are you comfortable managing them? Would you like to have access to sports medicine specialists regardless of where you are? Girls soccer and football are among the highest rates for sports concussion and start in mid-August for the WIAA.  I am doing my DNP project on the management of sports concussions via telemedicine and need help from ARNP's in primary care across Washington. I have worked in primary care for over 15 years and 9 years ago started working in sports medicine. I have worked with some of the leading experts on sports concussion over the years, some of whom are helping me with this project. Using telemedicine, I am hoping to show an increase in access to concussion specialists, decrease in travel time to a specialist and provider satisfaction. I would like the telemedicine to be a "concussion hotline" much like the poison control hotline. For this project (August 30-December 30, 2016) the telemedicine visits from my end are free. I am not working with any one healthcare system to encourage all users. The system is easy to use, no cost for the person accessing the system. I have approximately 30 athletic trainers helping me but would like nurse practitioner input as well. For the record, this has only been done one other place in the US and was much more costly to organize.

Feel free to contact me via email or the website portal. The website also has links to many concussion resources both here in Washington and nationally.   Thank you for once again helping me show nurse practitioners leading the way with healthcare innovation!
