Olympia Update: Duty to Warn Stalls in the House Judiciary Committee

Posted about 7 years ago by Nancy Lawton

Representative Jinkins on the Judiciary Committee of the House is not moving this bill forward. We urge you to contact her and your own House Representative and ask for a floor vote on SB 5800. Use this link to find your own representative.

This is the letter I sent to my representatives and to Representative Jinkins:

Dear Representative Jinkins: As President of the largest state organization representing Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners I want to express concern regarding the implications of the Supreme Court decision in the Volk vs. DeMeerLeer decision. Psychiatric nurse practitioners serve patients across the state, in rural and urban settings. This court decision will impact their ability to serve patients, without clearer definitions regarding the provider's duty to warn, without a specific threat to a credible target. I urge you to move this forward to a House vote and protect the ability of psychiatric nurse practitioners to continue serving outpatients.

Thank you for your attention. Sincerely, Nancy Lawton, MN, ARNP, FNP, President of ARNPs United of Washington State
