Program Description

Are you aware of the key legislative and prescriptive changes which impact Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in Oregon and Washington?  This educational event will focus on the latest information on controlled substance regulation and practice, medical and recreational marijuana, prescribing non-pharmaceutical items, key professional issues for APRNs, and changes to regulation or law for the 2017 session which impacts NPs, CNSs, CRNAs or Nurse Midwives.

Who Should Attend?  Nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and nurse midwives who practice in Oregon and/or Washington.

Desired Learning Outcome:  Learners will discuss the application of current legislative changes that relate to prescribing medications and treatments for patients.

  • Identify differences in state law between Oregon and Washington which impact APRN practice
  • Discuss regulatory and practice updates in controlled substance prescribing
  • Explore the legal and professional policy implications of marijuana laws in Oregon and Washington
  • Provide examples of non-pharmaceutical prescriptions and their suggested format
  • Analyze key professional issues in APRN practice on a state and national level
  • Describe changes in regulation or law which occurred in 2016-2017 that impact APRN practice

Tracy Klein,
 PhD, FNP, FAANP, FAAN

Tracy Klein is an Assistant Professor in the FNP/DNP program at Washington State University where her expertise includes Pharmacology, Scope of Practice/Roles for APRNs, Health Policy and Health Regulation. She has over 15 years of experience as an operations and policy analyst focusing on APRN regulation including development of law and regulation related to controlled substance prescribing. She has done policy development and consultation with the Oregon State Board of Nursing, NCSBN APRN Committee, and College of Registered Nurses in British Columbia. Dr. Klein serves as the current Vice-Chair of the Oregon State Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee and has been a member of Oregon’s Evidence Based Prescribing Review Committees since 2002. Her research interests focus on prescribing competencies for APRNs, legal authority and scope of practice, and NP prescribing patterns. In addition to her policy and teaching practice, she maintains clinical practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Vancouver, Washington in family practice and urgent care.

Accreditation

This educational activity will provide 6.0 contact hours (including 5.25 pharmacology hours) to learners who complete the Criteria of Successful Completion.

Acute Care Education (PA-48/Nov/17) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Washington State Nurses Association Continuing Nursing Education Approver (A-CNE), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Registration includes:  Attendance at program, downloadable program handouts, all day coffee, tea, water, and snacks.  All supplies are included. Wi-fi is available in the conference center.
