Overview

Palliative care is a holistic approach aimed at improving the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses and their families. This session will delve into the core principles of palliative care, the essential medications used for symptom management, and strategies for handling difficult conversations with patients and their families. We will explore the five fundamental principles of palliative care, which emphasize respecting patient goals and preferences; addressing medical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs; supporting family members; ensuring access to appropriate care settings; and fostering continuous improvement in care delivery. Effective symptom management is crucial in palliative care. This segment will cover the primary medications used, including anxiolytics and antidepressants, opioids for pain and dyspnea, antipsychotics for delirium, antiemetics for nausea, and laxatives for constipation. We will discuss the indications, administration routes, and potential side effects of these medications. Communication is a cornerstone of palliative care. This part of the session will provide practical techniques for engaging in difficult conversations about end-of-life care, breaking bad news, and discussing patient goals and preferences. We will highlight the importance of empathy, active listening, and cultural sensitivity in these interactions.
