Overview

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce guidelines and resources for effective medication management for mental health conditions commonly presenting in the primary care setting. Approximately eighty percent of psychiatric prescribing is done in the primary care setting, but advanced practice primary care providers often have minimal-to-no experience with psychiatry in their clinical rotations. This presentation will introduce strategies to help primary care providers prescribe appropriately and determine when referral is necessary. We will consider initial prescribing for anxiety, depression, psychoses, and substance use disorders.
